Cheaper Nvidia Shield Console Goes On Sale

The upcoming handheld gaming console from Nvidia got an official release date and a $50 price cut, but it remains to be seen if this is enough to make the portable system competitive against its older peers from Nintendo and Sony.
The Nvidia Shield packs some serious muscle and treats for gaming fans, most notably the company’s brand new Tegra 4 processor. The Android-powered console is officially out on June 27th.
Cheaper Nvidia Shield Console Goes on Sale
The initial price was $349 and after the $50 cut, the Shield will retail for $299. The same price point will be applied for preorders. Nvidia says that the price was lowered based on feedback from thousands of gamers.
Even after the cut, the console’s price is still rather high and will most likely appeal to hardcore Nvidia technology fans first of all. For comparison, Sony’s handheld PlayStation Vita sells for as little as $250, while Nintendo’s 3DS retails for about $200.
Nvidia is hoping however that the technical specs and capabilities of the console will determine buyers to take this much money out of their pocket. The console runs on Nvidia’s latest Tegra 4 mobile processor equipped with 2GB of RAM, 4 CPU cores and 72 CPU cores.
The console is also provided with a 5 inch multitouch display of 720p, 16GB of memory, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, a microSD slot, mini-HDMI output and a headphone jack. It measures 6.2×5.3×2.2 inch and weighs 20.04oz.
Nvidia Shield can run games from the TegraZone and the Google Play Store, but is also able tostream video games directly from your PC. The Shield further boasts a pretty amazing battery life that offers you local gaming for 6 to 9 hours and up to 16 hours during PC streaming.
As of tomorrow, the new console will be available on Nvidia’s website, as well as in major gaming equipment retail centers. The device will be sold with some pre-installed titles, as well as Hulu Plus and Twitch TV.

Vodafone unveils the future of festival season tech: Charge your phone while you sleep

New smartphone battery charging solutions appear on the market all the time, using all sorts of technologies from solar power to the energy generated by your bike pedaling or walking.
This new concept however captures and uses body heat to charge your phone, making it ideal for use in any situation, as the technology can be easily added to your clothes’ pockets. The Power Pocketprototype was developed by Vodafone and the University of Southampton.
Power Pocket Charges Your Phone Using Body Heat
The Power Pocket was unveiled just in time for the festival season, being designed as a must-have accessory for any festival goer who does not have access to a power outlet while camping at an outdoor music event. The technology will allow festival goers to charge their phone while dancing, talking and even sleeping.
The technology uses thermocouples, which are actually pairs of flexible and small thermoelectric material stitched onto clothing. Several of these thermoelectric materials are printed and connected together into a thermoelectric module.
This module has the ability to capture body movement and heat in order to boost mobile devices’ battery life, to offer a 24-hour power source. The technology generates electrical current by using the difference in temperature between the body and the surroundings.
To test the material, Vodafone has woven the modules to a pair of shorts (Power Shorts) and a sleeping bag (Recharge). A full day of dancing and walking while wearing the Power Shorts will provide enough power to charge your smartphone for 4 hours. And the heat generated by the Recharge sleeping bag during eight hours of sleep can add up to 11 hours to your smartphone’s battery.
The technology is still in development, in order to make it more durable and resistant. Researchers expect the material to become widely available in the next decade. Vodafone debuted the technology at the Isle of Wight Festival on June 13-16 and will also make it available at other festivals.

Now You Can Share Videos On Instagram

In a press event yesterday, the popular photo sharing app Instagram, announced the release of their new feature “Video on Instagram”.
It’s not a huge surprise after all the recent speculation as to what the event was about.
Kevin Systrom, CEO of Instagram, said in his speech that “the world is better captured and shared”. With the new video feature, the 130 million users will now have access to video in the same way they have had to photos.

Users will be able to capture 15-second videos that they can then share. There will be the possibility to edit the videos and apply one of the 13 new filters. The filters have been designed by an artist specialising in this field and it is all designed to make the videos look beautiful; as though a professional has captured them.
Instagram want this to be accessible for everyone and so will work on iOS and Android, as well as being available through the net. Systrom said it is “everything we know and love about Instagram but it moves.”
In designing this new feature, Instagram have taken it a step further with new ground-breaking technology. In addition to the new filters, they have also worked with leading scientists to erradicate the usual shaky, wobbly picture that has become a trademark of home video. Instagram call it simply, “Cinema”. This cinematic stabilisation feature enables the user to capture an action shot – someone running or riding a bike – without the shaky effect that usually happens when you are on the move.
According to Systrom, “You now have the power of the cinema in your pocket.”
This is the biggest change to Instagram since it was first launched. Systrom has always said that video could be in the future for Instagram but admitted that is harder with video to achieve their focus of speed, simplicity and beauty.
So now that it is possible to share videos as well as photos, we all have the opportunity to “Capture and share the world’s moments.”

Microsoft Drop Policies For Xbox One Games

Microsoft has confimed reports that it’s doing a U-turn on its policies surrounding used Xbox games and the “always on” feature of the device. This follows gamers’ anger at the restrictions imposed.
In an official blog post today Don Mattrick, Interactive President of Microsoft, said “Today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360″. Mr Mattrick said the company had “heard loud and clear” from its customers.

Gamers were angry at Microsoft’s policies
He continued by saying that an internet connection will no longer be required to play offline Xbox One games. A one-time connection is all that is required to setup a new Xbox One, after that gamers can play any disc-based game without going online again.

Trade-Ins

Microsoft are also doing away with their policy to ban certain types of trade-ins of disc-based games.
“There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360,” he wrote.
Originally, Microsoft set up the Xbox One to have a one-time lending policy for disc-based games, that would only be possible if the recipient was a friend on Xbox live for more than 30 days.
This change in policy only applies to disc-based games though and cannot be applied to downloaded titles ,which can’t be shared or resold.
Microsoft has also lifted regional restrictions. They had intended to region-lock games but this would have put importers and travellers outside the Xbox One supported countries.
There is a down-side to all of this though. Microsoft were planning to allow allow customers to trade downloaded games online in exchange for money off new titles but with these new policies in place, that will no longer happen.
Mattrick noted in his blog that consumers like the flexibility they have with disc-based games,along with the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world.
“Since unveiling our plans for Xbox One, my team and I have heard directly from many of you, read your comments and listened to your feedback. I would like to take the opportunity today to thank you for your assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One.”
No dount Microsoft felt increased pressure with Sony releasing the PlayStation 4, which is not only slightly cheaper but also does not impose any new restrictions on the use of PS4 game discs.

Saudi Arabia may block WhatsApp within weeks.  In March, Saudi officials threatened to block popular Internet messaging, call and chat services; WhatsApp, Skype and Viber if they did not comply with local government regulations.  This latest warning was issued after the Communications and Information Technology Commission blocked the popular messaging app Viber last week.

One of the regulations stipulates that WhatsApp establish a local server that allows officials to monitor user activity, Abdullah Al-Darrab told the news agency Arab News.   Al-Darrab, governor of the CITC, informed the English language news station that Saudi Arabia plans to block WhatsApp in coming weeks if the makers of the mobile chat app don’t comply with local regulations.
“We have been communicating with WhatsApp and other similar communication platforms to get them to cooperate and comply with the Saudi telecom providers, however nothing has come of this communication yet…We gave them a week to comply and have been communicating with them since March to no avail,” he said. “Therefore, this has left us with no choice but to block these services, beginning with Viber.”
The government in Saudi Arabia have cracked down on messaging apps before, temporarily banning BlackBerry messenger services after BlackBerry reportedly didn’t adhere to the country’s strict regulatory requirements. The Saudi government complained at that time the encrypted security used in the BlackBerry Messenger network prevented the government from monitoring communications channels, which it said could be used to threaten national security.

Whether you’re presenting slides in a boardroom in São Paulo or negotiating a Japanese contract in Tokyo, Google Drive speaks your language: 65 of them, to be exact, with the addition of 18 new ones today:

Afrikaans, Amharic, Basque, Chinese (Hong Kong), Estonian, French (Canada), Galician, Icelandic, Khmer, Lao, Malaysian, Nepali, Persian, Sinhalese, Spanish (Latin America), Swahili, Urdu, Zulu

You can switch back and forth as often as you like, and many of these languages are also supported by Drive’s spellchecker.

Love to collaborate? No matter which Drive app you’re using -- Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms -- you can work in real time in any language you choose while your fellow collaborators use another language.

To try Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides in another language, you can switch by:

  1. Clicking the gear icon in the upper right, then select Settings. 
  2. Under General, select a language from the drop-down menu in the Language section. 
  3. Click Save. You’re done!


To change the language for Google Drive for mobile, go to your device’s language settings. If you don’t yet have Drive for mobile, you can visit the Google Play or Apple App Store to get the Google Drive app.

How to install Official Jelly Bean 4.1.2 on Galaxy S2

Galaxy S2 GT-I9100 recently received its latest Jelly Bean Over-The-Air (OTA) update from Samsung via Android 4.1.2 VJMS4 official firmware. The firmware is currently available for download as OTA update as well as through Samsung KIES in select countries including Brazil.
However, those who missed the twin opportunities and those residing outside the supported countries can still download and install the same manually (provided the device is unlocked), using our step-by-step guide. NOTE: The installation of this OTA update does not require ClockworkMod recovery (CWM) or a rooted Galaxy S2 phone, as it can be installed manually via ODIN flash tool.

Step 1: Extract the firmware zip file to the desktop to get a .tar.md5 file and some other files (optional).
Step 2: Extract Odin zip file to obtain Odin3 v3.07.exe along with few other files.
Step 3: Power off the phone and wait for vibration (about 5-6 seconds) to confirm complete device shutdown. Now boot the phone into Download Mode by pressing and holding Volume Down, Home and Power button together until a construction Android robot icon with a triangle appears on screen. Then hit Volume Up button to enter Download Mode.
Step 4: Launch Odin3 v3.07.exe that you obtained in Step 2 as an Administrator, as Admin privileges are required to complete the firmware installation process smoothly.
Step 5: Connect your phone to computer via USB cable. When the device connects successfully, the message saying "Added!" appears in ODIN and the ID: COM box will turn yellow with the corresponding COM port number. If the message fails to appear, try reinstalling the phone's USB drivers or changing the port on the computer.
Step 6: Choose the following files from I9100VJMS4 folder that you obtained in Step 1 in Odin using respective checkboxes:
  • Select the PDA checkbox, and click the .tar.md5 file
  • Tap the Phone checkbox, and select the file named 'modem' (ignore if such file is not found)
  • Choose the CSC checkbox, and click the file named 'CSC' (ignore if there is no such file)
  • Click the PIT checkbox, and choose the '.pit' file (ignore if the file is missing)
Step 7: In Odin, enable Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time options by selecting the checkboxes. But the Re-Partition checkbox must be selected only if a .pit file was chosen in the previous step in ODIN.
Step 8: To prevent ROM related errors, verify Step 6 and Step 7 are done correctly. Then hit the START button to begin flashing the firmware.
Step 9: Once the firmware installation is complete, the phone will reboot automatically and soon a PASS message with green background appears in the left-most box at the very top of Odin. Now it is safe to disconnect the USB cable to remove the device from computer.
The Galaxy S2 GT-I9100 is now running on the latest Android 4.1.2 VJMS4 Jelly Bean OTA firmware. Go to Settings > About Phone to verify the firmware installed.
Troubleshooting:
If the phone is stuck at boot animation or Samsung logo after Step 9, then go torecovery mode (press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power buttons together) and perform Wipe data/Factory Reset as well as Wipe Cache Partition before choosing reboot system now option. Use Volume keys to navigate between options and Power key to select an option in recovery. Please note that performing data wipe task will only erase your phone's internal memory and not the data on SD card.

The new MacBook Air has finally arrived with an incredible change to battery life thanks to the new fourth generation Intel Haswell processor, however, we will still have to wait for the Retina display upgrade.
All of Apple‘s other high end devices (the iPhone 5, the MacBook Pro and the iPod touch) all have the Retina display, so why can’t  we have this wondrous visual feast in the new MacBook Air?  Well it all comes down to this: with the new Haswell chip installed, it was a trade off between extended battery life and the Retina display.  The battery life won, hands down, with the new processor on board, the focus was on battery longevity.  And with such a fantastic display anyway, do you care? The 11-inch MacBook Air’s display measures a mere 4.86 millimetres thin and features a resolution of 1366×768 pixels, while the 13-inch model has a resolution of 1440×900 pixels!  Both sizes have LED backlighting which makes colours bright and vibrant from all viewing angles. The Air comes with a 720p FaceTime HD Camera with Dual microphones and these microphones reduce background noise from behind the notebook, which is useful, say, when you use dictation software as they create an adaptive audio beam that intelligently adjusts to detect your voice, instead of the noise around you.

This new machine is powered by the all-new fourth-generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors with ultra efficient architecture, which was designed to use less power and still deliver high performance (this is where your extended battery life comes in) If you put the MacBook Air to sleep for more than 3 hours it enters standby mode to conserve battery life, for up to 30 days and if you enable the Power Nap feature, you’ll continue to receive new email and calendar invitations while your computer is asleep!
Even Faster WiFi
The MacBook Air now supports ultra-fast 802.11ac Wi-Fi. When connected to an 802.11ac basestation which includes the new AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule.
Apple say wireless performance is up to 3x faster than with the previous generation of MacBook Airand your Wi-Fi range improves as well. With Bluetooth technology installed you can connect MacBook Air to Bluetooth-enabled devices.

Not only does this make this notebook much lighter and more portable than traditional notebooks, it also provides a faster access to data and this latest machine comes in capacities up to 512GB.  This next-generation flash storage is up to a staggering 9x faster than a traditional 5400-rpm notebook hard drive. And it’s up to 45% faster than the flash storage in the previous-generation MacBook Air! The 11-inch model now comes as standard with 128GB of storage.  In addition, the new Intel HD Graphics 5000 chip offers up to a massive 40 per cent faster graphics power!
