Keeping in touch with family and friends has become easier and faster — thanks to our Android smartphone. However, not all people who can contact us through our mobile phones are people that we love and cherish; some are spammers, annoying strangers, telemarketers, and other unwanted callers. You don’t need to suffer these unwanted calls. Block them!
In this guide, learn how to block phone calls on your Android phone. You may also skip to our video guide below.

Built-in call blocking features

Most Android phones allow you to block contacts on your phone. The procedure can be unique on your Android phone. It varies from phone to phone.

Voicemail redirection on Nexus 4

how-to-block-phone-calls-android-aa-0042
Although not exactly a call blocking feature, the voicemail redirection feature on the Nexus 4 can be used as a call blocker of some sort. To redirect calls to voicemail, just select a contact from the People app, open the Menu, and select All Calls to Voicemail.
Calls from the selected contact will now be directed to your voicemail box. Also, if you don’t have a voicemail subscription or you haven’t setup your voicemail properly, the phone will automatically reject calls from the redirected contacts.

Call barring on Xperia T, HTC One

how-to-block-phone-calls-android-aa-0044
On the Xperia T and HTC One, call blocking is known as Call Barring, which can be accessed on either phone’s Call Settings page on the Settings menu. Here you can block all outgoing calls, outgoing international calls, outgoing international roaming, all incoming calls, or incoming international roaming calls from everyone. You will need your barring passcode in order to activate these features.

On the HTC One, there is another way to block calls — through the Phone app. Just open the menu in the Phone app and select Blocked Contacts. Then, tap the Add button to add a contact to block. You can either add a contact from the People app or manually enter a number to block.

Call rejection on Optimus G

how-to-block-phone-calls-android-aa-0047
To block calls on the LG Optimus G, go to Settings > Call > Call Reject. From there you can enable the phone’s feature to reject all calls. You can also create a rejection list that only blocks calls from contacts included on the rejection list.

Reject List on Galaxy S4

how-to-block-phone-calls-android-aa-0048
Users of the Samsung Galaxy S4 can take advantage of the phone’s Reject List, which keeps a list of numbers that are blocked.
There are two ways to add a contact onto the Reject List. The easiest way is as follows:
  1. Open the contact’s page.
  2. Tap the Menu button.
  3. Select Add to Reject List.
The steps above will cause all of the selected contact’s numbers to be added to the Reject List. On the Contacts list, blocked numbers are shown with the blue universal “No” symbol.
If you need to block only some of the contact’s numbers, you can unblock the valid numbers through the Auto Reject List menu in the Phone app.
how-to-block-phone-calls-android-aa-0049
Another way to block contacts is to manually add numbers to the Reject List, as follows:
  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Tap Call Settings.
  3. Tap Call Rejection.
  4. Tap Auto Reject List to open the list.
  5. Specify an exact number. You can also add numbers matching a search string that you specify. For example, you can add contact numbers that start or end with the digits that you provide, or includes the digits specified.

Blocking Mode on Galaxy S4

how-to-block-phone-calls-android-aa-0050
The Samsung Galaxy S4 also has the Blocking Mode feature, which lets you limit phone calls at certain hours. To enable Blocking Mode, go to Settings. Open the My Device page, tap the Blocking Mode option, and from there turn on the Blocking Mode switch. You can select what features to block. You can disable incoming calls, notifications, alarm and timer, and/or LED indicator.
When blocking calls in this way, all incoming calls will be automatically rejected and you will not hear any ring or feel any vibration when there is an incoming call, but you will see a notification of the missed call. If you want certain contacts to be able to reach you even if Blocking Mode is enabled, specify them in the list of Allowed Contacts.

Third-party apps for blocking phone calls

If your Android phone doesn’t have an inbuilt call blocking feature or if it does but you find it lacking, you can choose one from the many third-party call blocking apps on the Google Play Store. Of particular note are the Mr. Number app, Call Blocker app, and Calls Blacklist app.

Mr. Number

how-to-block-phone-calls-android-aa-0051
The Mr. Number app is a free and ads-free Android app that allows you to block unwanted calls and texts on your mobile phone. This app protects your phone from spam, silence selected contacts, or even keep your phone inaccessible by the rest of the world.
Mr. Number also has a Remote Lookup feature that allows you to find information about an unknown caller in the U.S. The first 20 lookups are free and you will be charged about US$1.00 for the next 20 lookups. This app also has a Business Caller ID that provides information about callers using a business line.
Here’s a general idea of how to use Mr. Number:
  1. Download, install, and launch the Mr. Number app. Tap OK to continue.
  2. Verify your country. Select your country with your country code, and type your phone number. Tap OK to continue.
  3. To begin blocking contacts, tap the “No” or prohibition symbol at the upper-right portion of the screen to access the block list.
The Blocklist contains three tabs: Hang Up, Voicemail, and Exceptions.
how-to-block-phone-calls-android-aa-0052
When a contact listed on the Hang Up tab tries to call you, your phone will automatically Hang Up the call. Callers listed under Voicemail will have their calls redirected to the voicemail box. You can add numbers to the Hang Up and/or Voicemail tabs in various ways:
  1. Suspected spam
  2. All private/blocked numbers
  3. Choose from recent calls or texts
  4. Enter a number
  5. Choose from contacts
  6. All numbers not in contacts
  7. All numbers beginning with…
  8. All numbers in contacts
  9. All numbers
The Exceptions tab lists contacts that will not be blocked or redirected. So, if you want to keep in touch with your family and friends while keeping the strangers and spammers at bay, register your family and friends’ contact numbers under the Exceptions tab.
You can also block contacts right from the app’s main screen. Under the Recent tab, which shows the history of received calls and text, tap the Menu button beside each log entry and select Block Number. A popup will appear, asking you whether to block the contact or redirect all the contact’s calls to your voicemail. You can also mark it as a spam number and add a comment about the blocked contact number.
A notification will appear every time the app intercepts a blocked contact. The history of blocked contacts will be displayed under the Blocked History tab on the app’s main screen.

Call Blocker

how-to-block-phone-calls-android-aa-0053
Another handy call blocker app that you’d want to try is the free and ad-supported Call Blocker app. If you subscribe to the paid and ad-free version, you can enjoy premium features, including the Private Space feature that securely stores private SMS messages and call logs.
Here’s a general idea of how to use Call Blocker:
  1. Download, install, and launch the Call Blocker app. Tap Agree to continue.
  2. On the app’s main menu, tap the Blocked Calls button.
  3. Tap the add button (represented by an icon of paper with check and X marks)
  4. The Blacklist and Whitelist tabs will be displayed on the screen. Tap Add Number to add a contact. You can add a number via your contacts, call log, or SMS log, or you can type the number directly. Contacts listed on the Blacklist tab will be blocked (of course!) while contacts on the Whitelist tab will be exempted.

Calls Blacklist

how-to-block-phone-calls-android-aa-0054
Last but not the least on our list is the free and ad-supported Calls Blacklist, a very simple app for keeping a list of contacts that you don’t want to allow to contact your phone. An ad-free premium version is also available for about US$3.00.
To block calls with Calls Blacklist, just launch the app and add a contact number to the Blacklist tab. You can add a number via your Contacts, call logs, or messages log, or add numbers manually. And, that’s it! Contacts saved under Blacklist won’t be able to call your Android phone anymore.

How to uninstall apps on the Galaxy S4

galaxy-s4-how-to-uninstall-apps-aa-0013
Galaxy S4 apps, how do I uninstall thee? Let me count the ways.
Android is an app-driven platform. Everything that you can do on your Galaxy S4 you can achieve by running apps. Some apps (especially system apps) come with your phone straight from the factory, others you install from sources such as the Google Play Store. There’s not much that you can do to remove preinstalled system apps, but — just in case you haven’t gotten round to actually doing it first time — you can actually uninstall user apps and recover storage space.
If you think that the only way to uninstall apps on the Galaxy S4 is through the Google Play Store app, then this article holds a few surprises for you. In this article, you’ll learn how to uninstall apps on the Galaxy S4. There are actually several ways to do it.

Using Google Play Store app

galaxy-s4-how-to-uninstall-apps-aa-0014
This, of course, is a no-brainer. But, for completeness, let me just include this here. While you can argue that the Uninstall button is hard to miss on a freshly installed app’s page in the Google Play Store app, some people do have the innate ability to overlook that button.
Although not the one and only source, the Google Play Store is the default primary source of apps for most Android users. Its accompanying app allows you to discover and install new apps or remove and uninstall old ones.
App uninstallation via the Play Store app takes only a few steps:
  1. open Play Store app,
  2. tap on Menu,
  3. select My Apps,
  4. tap on name of app to be removed, and
  5. tap the Uninstall button.
galaxy-s4-how-to-uninstall-apps-aa-0015
Yup — that easy. Doesn’t take a genius, really.
Take note, however, that if you manually install apps through some other way besides the Play Store, those apps sometimes do not appear on the list in the Play Store app. Such apps can be uninstalled through other means.

Using Application Manager

galaxy-s4-how-to-uninstall-apps-aa-0016
Besides the Play Store app, Android’s built-in Application Manager can also be used to uninstall apps. Just open the Settings app, tap on the More tab, and select Application Manager.
In Application Manager, you should be able to see a list of your installed apps, organized into four tabs:
  • Downloaded — Lists all apps that you downloaded to your phone
  • On SD Card — Lists all apps that are installed in your phone’s storage
  • Running — Lists all apps that are active or are running in the background
  • All — Lists all apps, regardless of source or installation location
To remove an app using the Application Manager, just tap the app’s name on the list to open the app’s info page, then tap the Uninstall button. It’s that easy. You may want to tap the Clear Data and Clear Cache buttons first before hitting Uninstall.

Using TouchWiz UI

App Drawer Edit Mode

galaxy-s4-how-to-uninstall-apps-aa-0017
If, for some reason, you find the Play Store or Application Manager method a bit long-winded for your app uninstallation pursuits, seek refuge in TouchWiz.
The Samsung TouchWiz interface for the Galaxy S4 comes with a UI-based method for easily uninstalling an app. You can do it in just four steps:
  1. Open the App Drawer.
  2. Tap Menu.
  3. Tap Edit.
  4. Hold down and drag the app’s icon to the Uninstall icon at the top-right.
The foregoing method also lets you remove apps that you manually installed.

Alternate UI method

galaxy-s4-how-to-uninstall-apps-aa-0018
An alternate method for easily uninstalling apps from the App Drawer is as follows:
  1. Open the App Drawer.
  2. Tap Menu.
  3. Tap Uninstall.
  4. You’ll see red bars overlayed on the icons of apps that you can uninstall. Just tap on the red bar to uninstall the app.
The foregoing method also lets you remove apps that you manually installed.

Using an app manager app

galaxy-s4-how-to-uninstall-apps-aa-0019
Yet another way to remove an app from your Galaxy S4 is through the use of app managers, task managers, or file manager / explorer apps. There are several of such apps on the Google Play Store.
ES File Explorer, for example, has an App Manager component that lets you uninstall, backup, share, or send apps. Most remote device management apps such as AirDroid also have app uninstallation features.

Using ADB

If you’re into command-line interaction with your Galaxy S4, then you’ll probably want to learn some uninstallation tricks using the Android Debug Bridge (ADB). For this method to work, you’ll need a working ADB setup on your computer. Also, ADB must be able to recognize your Galaxy S4 when you run the command adb devices at a terminal.
To uninstall an app via ADB, you must know the app’s package name (which is not necessarily the app’s APK file name). If you don’t know the app’s package name, you can quickly summon a list of the names of installed packages on your phone with the following command:
adb shell pm list packages
Here’s an example output of the command above:
adb-packages-list
Each package name listed is prefixed with package:, but you should be able to easily spot your app’s package name from the list. According to the list, the package name for the Mozilla Firefox app, for example, is org.mozilla.firefox. Once you’ve identified the app’s package name, simply issue the following command:
adb uninstall packagename
where packagename is the app’s package name. So, to uninstall Mozilla Firefox, for example, you’d use the following command:
adb uninstall org.mozilla.firefox
adb-uninstall-command

How to manually install Android 4.4 KitKat – Nexus 7 (2012/2013) WiFi, Nexus 10 (Update: Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 3G/4G links too)

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
sAndroid 4.4
Updated with links to the OTA zip files for the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 (2012/13) mobile data models. You can find them at the bottom of the article.
After hearing that Android 4.4  KitKat would be rolling out to the Nexus 10 and WiFi variants of the Nexus 7 (2012/2013), many of us jumped to check to see if we’d receive the update. Unfortunately, Google tends to take its time updating devices and we could be in for a rather lengthy wait.
As Android enthusiasts, you know we couldn’t simply wait to try all of that KitKat, and luckily there’s a method to install Android 4.4 KitKat onto your device manually using ADB sideload. Here’s a step by step guide (with images!), to help you manually download and install Android 4.4 KitKat onto your Nexus tablet. (Wifi variants only).
Android Authority takes no responsibility for what may happen to your device. While this is a reasonably safe procedure, you continue at your own risk. This procedure is recommended to intermediate and advanced Android users.

What you need

  • A WiFi variant Nexus 7 (2012 or 2013) or Nexus 10 with drivers installed.
  • A microUSB cable
  • Windows PC/Linux/Mac
  • Running the latest variant of Android 4.3 with the build number “JSS15R” for the Nexus 7 (2013), “JWR66Y” for the Nexus 7 (2012) and Nexus 10. (must be running the stock ROM, not a custom one)
  • The latest version of the Android SDK (which can be found here).
  • Zip file containing the Android 4.4 file for your tablet. Click here for the file for the Nexus 7 (2012). Click here for the link for the Nexus 7 (2013). Click here for the Nexus 10 file. (All files are from Google servers and are completely safe)
  • Make sure that if you’re using a laptop it is connected to a power point or at the very least fully charged. Ensure your tablet is also fully charged.
  • Optional: Create a backup of your data before you begin.
This method will not clear data, and you shouldn’t lose any of your app data or settings.

How to flash the update

1. Make sure you have a microUSB cable at hand, as well as a PC or Mac, and are running the latest Android 4.3 version. Also make sure that you’ve already downloaded the Android SDK, as well as the Android 4.4 update zip file for your respective device and have all of your drivers installed.
IMG_3198
2. Go to Settings>About Phone>Click on build number seven times until the message “You are now a developer” appears. Exit from “About phone” and scroll down and find the “Developer Options” setting. Click on this and then enable USB debugging.
IMG_3207
2 (b). Connect your tablet to your computer and a warning should pop up with the computers unique RSA number asking if you want to connect to the computer. Click “Always connect to computer” and accept. Then disconnect the USB cable from the computer. Now turn off your device.
3. Return to your computer and unzip the Android SDK that you should have already installed (if not return to the “what you need” section and make sure you’ve completed all of the steps before returning).
4. Find the zip file containing the Android 4.4 update and rename it to something easy like “Kitkat”. Then move the file to the Android SDK in the folder titled “Platform tools”. (This will make things easier when using the command prompt).
5. Return to your tablet and power it back on by holding Power and Volume down buttons at the same time. You will now be faced with the fastboot mode.
IMG_3210
Fastboot Mode.
6. Click the volume up button until you see the words “Recovery mode”. Press the power button to accept. It will show the Google logo and then you’ll be greeted by an Android with an exclamation mark and the words “no command written”. Use the micro USB to connect to your computer.
IMG_3227
Recovery mode
7. Hold the
homepower button down first, then quickly hold the volume up button while still holding down the power button (this is a little difficult and you’ll need to work on your timing before getting it right). You will then see this:
IMG_3230
8. Use the volume down button to go down to “apply update from ADB” and hit the power button to accept. You will then see this:
IMG_3236
9. (Almost done!) Now return to your computer for the final steps. Open the folder containing the Android SDK and open the “platform-tools” folder. If you’re using Windows Vista/7/8, hold shift and then right click on any empty space. You’ll see the option “Open command window here”. If you’re using Linux or OSX or Windows XP open a command prompt and then navigate to “platform-tools”.
IMG_3233
Windows 8 command prompt window.
10. In the command window type the following command “adb sideload Android KitKat”, without the quotation marks and substituting Android KitKat for whatever you named the zip file containing Android 4.4 for your device. Edit: Remember to add the extension “.zip” to the end of the file name for the zip file.
11. If you’ve done everything correctly, you can now sit back and watch your device install the update itself, if not head to the troubleshoot section to see some of the problems you could be facing.
IMG_3246
12. One the update has been installed, you’ll see the counter hit 100% and you can now boot up your device. Voila! KitKat chocolaty goodness for your Nexus tablet!
Android 4.4 KitKat logo - aa
Remember that you will lose root by using this method. Also remember that the update does not bring the new Google launcher with “Ok Google” and swipe left for Google Now functionality.

Troubleshoot

  •  If your device isn’t being read try another USB port or perhaps another USB cable.
  • If it still isn’t being read, try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for your tablet.
  • If that doesn’t work try manually installing the drivers by following this link to download the universal drivers for your tablet. Unzip the downloaded folder, then simply open your device manager and manually install the update by right clicking on your device and click “update device” then in the pop up window “browse folders” and find the folder that you just unzipped and install the drivers.
  • If that doesn’t work, my final method is to use PdaNet. The program is normally used to tether your smartphone to your computer, however it also works very well helping you install the drivers for your device. Follow this link to install the program on your computer. You can always uninstall the program once you are done using it.
  • If you are stuck in a boot loop you may need to go back into recovery and clear cache and if that doesn’t work you’ll have to factory reset (loss of all data, so remember to back up folks!). Luckily these measures are very rarely necessary.

Update! (Links for Nexus and 3G/4G Nexus 7 models)

UPDATE: Here are the links for the rest of the Nexus devices eligible to get the Android 4.4 update.

Nexus 4:

Android 4.4 KRT16S from Android 4.3 JWR66Y
Android 4.4 KRT16S from Android 4.4 KRT16O

Nexus 7 (2012) 3G:

Android 4.4 KRT16S from Android 4.3 JWR66Y
Android 4.4 KRT16S from Android 4.4 KRT16O

Nexus 7 (2013) 4G:

Android 4.4 KRT16S from Android 4.3 JLS36I
Just choose the correct zip file for your respective device and download it, and then continue with the instructions already provided. Just like the other links, this method won’t make you lose any data. Also, for those of you who were asking, this method differs from the factory images method as it doesn’t require you to have your bootloader unlocked, and it won’t lose any data. It’s also a little easier than the factory images method for the same reasons.
Have you used ADB sideload to push the Android 4.4 KitKat update to your Nexus tablet or are you waiting for the official OTA? What do you think of Android 4.4 KitKat?
