How to Upgrade Your Smartphone Camera with Sony QX10

A smartphone camera lens with a camera on its own; this is what Sony QX10 is all about. Despite being redundant, this accessory makes smartphone photography innovatively new in every sense. It can be somehow related to mirrorless kit lens, only a bit smaller in size and in megapixels. And instead of having its own screen, these lenses use the display of smartphones like a wirelessly connected viewfinder. Users can attach these add-ons using a spring loaded clip or have it detached, as long as it stays within a specific range to adjacent to the smartphone.

Tech brand Sony has released this camera lens along with another higher end number, the QX100. There is a big difference in pricing (QX10 comes in $250 while QX100 doubles the price, a whopping $500) as well as in obvious megapixels and sensors. The cheaper of the two, QX10 still promises a photographer-experience using a smartphone camera.
QX10 runs on a ½.3 inch CMOs image sensor and possesses a 10x optical zoom lens, which is surprisingly comparable to many $300 range digital point and shoot cameras. This is easily paired with NFC running phones, with its controls available within the mobile app Sony PlayMemories. From the app, users can find the shutter button, zoom, video toggles and three different shooting modes: the intelligent auto, superior auto and the program auto.

The images are saved in two locations, in a microSD card that fits into the QX10 slip and the smartphone’s own storage. It promises better low-light shooting and a powerful optical zoom that definitely upgrades a smartphone camera’s weak camera into a better quality. QX10 is a fun and quirky accessory that makes a nice addition to a photo enthusiast who hates carrying bulky SLRs. This provides a marriage between lenses and smartphones. Sony’s QX10 is among the many possibilities of tech giants creating different lens add-ons for mobile gadgets, emphasizing a camera-centric utility.

How to Root Qmobile Noir A8

Please follow these simple step-by-step instructions to root your QMobile Noir A8 smartphone:

Download and extract this zip file: Noir_A8_root.zip (Drivers and rooting tool)
From your Qmobile Noir A8, go to Settings > Developer Options > Check mark “USB Debugging” and then tap OK button.
Now connect your Noir A8 to your computer. If the Windows ask for drivers, manually provide the location of “Noir A8 USB ADB drivers” and install them.
Now turn OFF your Qmobile Noir A8, unplug cable and re-plug it. Windows will attempt to install more drivers. Go to “Noir A8 Preloader VCOM” folder and install drivers from there.
Now turn ON your mobile and make sure it’s still in debugging mode.
Go to the folder named “Root_script_by_Bin4ry_v15″ and run the “Runme.bat” file. This should open the command prompt.
Choose the Normal mode by typing ’1′ and hit Enter button from your keyboard.
After some processing, you’ll be asked to click “Restore” on your Noir A8 screen.
From your mobile phone, tap the Restore button at bottom-right corner. After some processing your phone should reboot and when it’s back ON, you Qmobile Noir A8 should be rooted. Check for the superuser app in your app drawer.

With a rooted Qmobile Noir A8 you can not only install custom launchers, it open a whole new world of customization and freedom for you. For a low internal memory error you can always use Link2SD with microSD card.

Create Bootable Windows 8 Installer USB With Win8USB

There was a time when we could only install Windows on our computers using CDs. Installing Windows from a USB flash drive seemed a thing of the future, but today, using a USB flash drive to install Windows is as common as using DVDs. Newer versions of Microsoft Windows, like Windows 7, can be installed in two ways: directly while running a previous version of Windows, or using a bootable USB / CD. If your PC doesn’t have an OS installed, you will need a bootable USB flash drive to boot the system into Windows installation setup. Previously, we have covered tools to install Windows 7 from a bootable USB drive, including Windows 7 USB/ DVD Tool, a tool that allows you to create a bootable USB flash drive in only 2 simple steps, and WinToFlash, a utility to copy Windows installation files from a DVD disc to a USB flash Drive, SD Card or external HDD. Since the Consumer Preview of Windows 8 is out, we decided to featureWin8USB, an application that lets you create a bootable USB flash drive for installing Windows 8. Keep reading to find out more about Win8USB after the break.

It is an application for Windows that allows you to create a bootable USB of Windows 8 installer using an ISO image. The application has some pre-requisites that you need to address before you can start making bootable USB drives of Windows 8. First, you need to have Windows Vista or above installed on your system to create a Windows 8 bootable USB. Second, you may require administrative privileges to write boot code to selected USB drive.

The utility offers you a complete package for creating the bootable USB drive. It allows you to format your USB flash drive, extract files on to the drive and write the USB Boot MBR. To create a bootable USB flash drive, select the drive that you want to use as the bootable USB drive and specify the source location of Windows 8 installation ISO file stored in your computer. Now, check the Format drive option and click Create to begin the writing process.

A couple of things to keep in mind is that you’ll need to have the Windows 8 ISO at hand for Win8USB to work. Also, make sure that the USB drive is of at least 4GB storage capacity. The application works on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7.

How To Use Multiple Skype Accounts Simultaneously

Voice over Internet Protocol – or simply VoIP – has become significantly popular during the past few years. This revolutionary technology allows making voice and video calls over the internet, saving you those hefty monthly phone bills. When it comes to VoIP, Skype is one huge player that simply can not be overlooked. The now Microsoft-owned service has earned critical acclaim due to its efficient and reliable communication medium, becoming the default choice for many when employing a VoIP service. People who use Skype’s desktop client would know that the app doesn’t let you sign in with multiple Skype accounts simultaneously, which can be quite an annoyance should you have separate personal and work Skype accounts that you want to use at the same time. This is where lightweight Windows appSeaside comes to the rescue; it simply allows you to run more than one instance of the Skype desktop app.

The application itself doesn’t come with a modified version of Skype, but rather just enables Windows to execute multiple processes of the Skype app at the same time. In order to use Seaside, make sure you already have the Skype app installed on your PC. Upon installation, the tool automatically launches a minuscule console window from where you can configure your Skype accounts. To add an account, specify the Account Type (Skype or Microsoft), User Name and Password, and click the Add button. Any account you add to Seaside appears in the accounts box at the top. There’s practically no limit on the total number of accounts you may add. In addition to adding accounts, you can mark tge ‘Automatically check for updates’ checkbox at the bottom to let Seaside download the latest version of the tool whenever an update is released.

Seaside creates two desktop icons upon installation: one for accessing the app’s configuration console, and another for launching the specified number of Skype instances in the configuration window. So in order to access configuration window any time, just double-click its shortcut. To run multiple Skype instances as specified in your configuration, just double-click the ‘Seaside Start Multi Skype now’ icon.

The screenshot below demonstrates multiple instances of Skype running with separate accounts signed in, using this nifty little tool.

Overall, Seaside is an excellent freeware app that solves the problem of not being able to use two or more Skype accounts on the same computer together. It works on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. Testing of the app was carried out on Windows 8 Pro, 64-bit edition.

How to Jailbreak Lumia 710/800 to install paid apps

In the opinion of most Windows Phone 7 users, the Nokia Lumia series represents the best breed of WP7 devices. The awesome camera, form-factor and display of the Lumia 800 and 710 have gone a long way towards endearing Nokia’s Mango phones to the masses. Given the popularity of these devices, it makes sense that the developer community has been taking an active interest in finding an interop unlock method (or in simple terms, jailbreak) for the Lumia series. Fortunately, they seem to have stricken gold (or silver, for that matter). If you are lucky, Nokia sold you your device with an unlocked bootloader, paving the way for flashing custom ROMs and attaining interop unlock. Such bootloader is not to be found in all Lumia 800s, but the owners of Lumia 710 might be a whole lot more fortunate than that. Confused? Read on, and we will try to explain matters.

To check if you are one of those lucky few who have got an unlocked Qualcomm boot loader, follow the steps stated below.

Instructions For Checking If Your Device Can Be Unlocked:

Disconnect your Lumia 710 or Lumia 800 from your PC or charging inlet, and then turn it off.
Press the Volume Up and Power buttons simultaneously while the phone is still off. A short vibration will be felt, and at this point, you have to connect your phone to the PC via a USB cable. Don’t let go of the buttons for now.
Now, you will see that your system is trying to install drivers for the phone. If you don’t see it on Windows, go to the Devices and Printers menu and you will find the device driver name there.
In case you are presented with the option to format the device, press No.
If your Lumia 800 is being displayed as a Nokia DLOAD, you are out of luck and your phone can’t get an interop unlock for now. However, if you are lucky and the device type is USB Mass Storage, or anything to that effect, you have an unlocked boot loader!

Lumia 710 users will be able to get back their unlocked bootloader even if their device is being displayed as a Nokia DLOAD. To do so, follow these steps.

Go to this link (the content is in Russian, but you should be able to find the download link near the end of the linked page), and grab the firmware provided there.
Using the Nokia Care Suite, flash the firmware (downloaded in the previous step) to your 710.

Please keep in mind that you will only need to follow the above 2 steps if your Lumia 710 shows up as Nokia DLOAD in bootloader mode. Also, Lumia 800 can not be downgraded in a similar fashion, so you are stuck without an unlock for now if your Lumia 800 doesn’t show up as a USB Mass Storage device.

All our discussion and procedures so far were just to determine whether your Lumia is capable of flashing custom ROMs or not. If, by hook or crook, you have managed to get an unlocked bootloader on your Nokia WP7, you are finally ready to flash the first ever custom ROM for Lumia 710 and Lumia 800. For now, these ROMs won’t give you a full unlock, but an interop unlock isn’t too bad, as you will be able to run most homebrew apps, and now that WP7 Root Tools (reviewed here) has been released, interop unlocked devices can do almost anything full unlocked ones can. Here is what you will have to do to flash the custom ROM to your Lumia handset.

Instructions:

It is better if you perform this procedure on a Linux system, but it should work fine for Windows users as well. Go to this link, and grab the files for your phone (separate set of links provided for 710 and 800).
For Windows, download this tool, but for Linux, you will just have to execute the following command.
dd if=./os-new.nb of=/dev/sdX9
In the above step, “X” marks the drive which has been detected by your system.
Once the above step has been performed, perform a hard reset on your phone. This can be done by pressing the Power button for 10 seconds, followed by holding the Power, Volume Down and Camera button simultaneously. When your phone vibrates, let the Power button go while maintaining your grip on the other two. Now, your phone has been hard reset.

Hard resetting your device will wipe out all the data, so it is better if you create a backup beforehand. You can learn more about “dd” by heading to this post. Lion UX Pack: Transforms Windows 7 To Mac OS X Lion User Interface

Those of you who have been regularly following AddictiveTips, would know that we have covered a number of elegant skin packs for our readers in the past, including the Android , Windows Phone 7 Mango, iOS, Windows 8 and the Ubuntu Skin Pack. Most of these skin packs were developed by Hamed, and required following a simple setup wizard for getting the job done, instead of going through any complex theme patching methods. Recently, we cam across a Mac OS X Lion skin pack that was even easier to install than the previously reviewed Lion Skin Pack. The Lion UX Pack has been designed to instantly transform your Windows 7 system into a Mac OS X Lion style desktop.

You can simply install the Lion UX Pack by launching the setup file, selecting the system font, dock configuration (enabled, disabled or auto-hide), and selecting other OS X UI elements that you want, including the start orb, caption button, expose feature and spaces. Click Install to transform your Windows 7 desktop.

The Lion UX Pack, surprisingly, does not provide any installation wizard or system reboot, and transforms the desktop immediately after you click Install.

Note: Please bear in mind that such transformation packs are difficult to uninstall, and often, a system restore point will not revert the changes. Before installing the Lion UX Pack , make sure that you backup your computer to revert the changes (if required). Moreover, make sure that UAC (User Account Control) is disabled.

The below screenshot displays the Mac OS X Lion style UI changes that you will get for your Windows 7 desktop.

After installation of this transformation pack, we experienced some internet connectivity issues. It cannot be determined if this was a problem specific to a specific kind of network adapter/system, or is a skin pack bug. For this reason, do follow the instructions mentioned in the disclaimer above, before proceeding with the skin pack installation. The skin pack is also ad-supported, as it offers to change the homepage for the web browsers installed on the system. Lion UX Pack works on Windows 7 only.

Mango Skin Pack: Transforms Windows 7 Into Windows Phone 7 Mango

Mango Skin Pack is a Windows 7 transformation pack for giving your desktop the Windows Phone 7 Mango look. This Skin Pack is part of transformation packs developed by Hamed, who previously brought us the iOS, Windows 8, Mac OS X, Ubuntu and Android skin packs.

Note: Please bear in mind that such transformation packs are difficult to uninstall and a system restore point will not revert the changes. Before installing the Mango Skin Pack, make sure that you backup your computer to revert the changes (if required). Moreover, make sure that UAC (User Account Control) is disabled.

To get started, launch the EXE file and accept the terms and conditions. You can either go for the quick installation process or choose Custom Install option to uncheck unwanted items. It must be noted that this skin pack is ad-supported as it attempts to set the developers Skin Page as your default home page. You can uncheck this option during the custom installation.

This will install all required components of the skin pack. Once installation is complete, reboot the system to get the Windows Phone 7 Mango look for your Windows 7 desktop. Installing

It is worth mentioning here that unlike previous transformation packs by Hamed, the Mango Skin Pack seems a bit lackluster since the black background overshadows many of the primary elements of the Windows Explorer. The black look itself seems a bit pixelated.

How To Install OS X Mountain Lion On A Windows PC

Macs and PCs have competed with each other for a long time and a fairly large number of users run both OS X and Windows side by side. If you’d like to see what using a Mac feels like (and maybe you’re thoroughly impressed with the images coming out of NASA’s control room featuring multiple Macs), but aren’t in the mood of buying a real one, a Hackintosh is just the thing for you to try. Although a somewhat difficult feat, it is possible to run the latest version of OS X i.e. Mountain Lion on your PC given you have the right hardware devices. In the event that your hardware isn’t compatible, you will, very likely, have to go shopping for new ones. With the proper hardware, creating your very own Hackintosh is simple. This guide details the process for running Mac OS X Mountain Lion on a regular PC. Tests were carried out on an HP ProBook 4530s. No changes to the hardware were made. You will need a USB drive drive that has 8GB storage space and a friend who owns a Mac.

Know Your Hardware

Apple is very particular about the hardware that its OS can run on and not every PC will be compatible. Before you can check for compatibility, you need to first know the name and model of the different hardware components that are installed in your PC. There are two ways of finding out the information; you can grab a screwdriver, open your PC’s case and literally take a look inside. Model numbers should be readable on the components. You can remove and insert items like the graphics card, and other chips easily. Unlike Macs, nothing is soldered onto the Motherboard in PCs however, it is likely you might lose a few screws in this process. The other and much easier way would be to use Speccy, an advanced system information tool that can tell you what’s running under the hood.

Hardware Compatibility

Once you know what hardware is running on your PC, you have to check for compatibility. Your main concern here will be the system motherboard. The drivers you need to run all components once Mountain Lion is up and running will depend on your motherboard. You will need to create an account on tonymax86 to get drivers. Once you’re logged in, head over to Resources>DSDT. From the Choose your Motherboard dropdown menu, see if your Motherboard is listed. If it is, you will be able to download its DSDT file. Select the relevant entry based on model number and brand, and download it.

Once you’ve downloaded the DSDT for your PC’s motherboard (this will be a single file), set the file aside for later use. You will need to copy it to your Hackintosh once you’ve booted into Mountain Lion. There isn’t a large range of motherboards supported for laptops, but a reasonable number of Intel Motherboards and ASUS ones are supported. If your motherboard isn’t listed, you get the short end of the stick and getting a new motherboard or buying and assembling a new PC are your only options.

While you’re here, and assuming your motherboard was supported, head over to Resources>Downloadsand download Unibeast for Mountain Lion and Multibeast. Unibeast is the boot loader that you will need to install Mac OS X Mountain Lion and then boot the Mac OS X on your PC, while Multibeast is a comprehensive cutomization utility for hackintosh, which gives you the liberty to choose the drivers, critical ktexts, EasyBeast (permanent Mac OS X bootloader) and more.

Getting Mountain Lion Installer

This part can be slightly tricky; what you need is a friend or co-worker who already owns a Mac and is running Mountain Lion. It would help if said friend or coworker likes to share and has a reasonable amount of faith in your technology tinkering skills. What you need from your friend is the Mountain Lion installer. The installer is the file that’s downloaded when Mountain Lion is purchased from the Mac App Store. It’s best to ask a friend to make a copy of this file before they install and upgrade their OS or it will have to be downloaded again. Make sure the file name is not changed when copying the file from one location to the other.

Preparing Your USB Drive For Unibeast

Next you need to prepare your USB drive. Plug it into a Mac and go to Applications>Utilities and launchDisk Utility. You will see your USB drive on the left, select it (make sure you have not selected the Mac HD). There are five tabs on the left; select the Partition tab. From the Partition Layout dropdown menu select 1 Partition, and from the Format dropdown, select Mac OS Extended (Journaled). This is essential for booting into OS X.

Next, click the Options button at the bottom of the Partition Layout column and in the panel that slides open select Master Boot Record. This is necessary to create a bootable USB for PCs. Before you click OK, make sure that Format is set Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Now, give your USB drive an appropriate name and hit Apply to format your drive.

Next, copy the Mac OS X Mountain installer to the Applications folder, and then launch Unibeast (you downloaded this earlier from tonymacx86). UniBeast will pretty much take care of the whole process. During installation, you will get two options in Installation Type; Legacy USB Support and Laptop Support. Check Laptop Support if you’re installing on a Laptop and Legacy Support if you have an Intel processor and the model number is three digits long, (Speccy should help you here if you aren’t sure about the exact model number).

Do not panic if it takes too long to create bootable USB drive with Mac OS X Mountain Lion installer. Once installation is complete, your work with the Mac is done and you can head back to your soon-to-be-a-Hackintosh PC.

Configuring Your PC

Turn your PC on and enter into the BIOS by hitting DEL, F2, F10 or other system reserved key; the button that allows you to open the BIOS varies from system to system but is conveniently displayed for a fraction of a second when you turn your PC on. Here, you have to make two changes; you need to set the first boot priority to USB Device and set your Drive Controller to AHCI mode. Normally, they are set to IDE, but OS X does not support it. Save these changes, plug in the USB you created and reboot your system.

Booting Mac OS X Mountain Lion On Your PC

When you turn your PC on, it will boot from the USB and your screen should show all bootable drives (hard drive partitions) and bootable USB drive (containing the Mac OS X installer). Select the Mountain Lion installer bootable drive to begin the installation process.

Select the installer to begin the installation and the following screen will appear. Do not hit continue since your hard disk isn’t ready to install OS X yet. Instead, go to Utilities from the menu bar and select Disk Utility.

This is the same Disk Utility you used on the Mac when preparing the USB drive. Select your PC hard disk and go to the Partition tab. Here, select 1 Partition from Partition Layout, set Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and then hit Options to select GUID Partition Table in the panel that slides open. Once done, hit Apply to prepare your hard disk for Mac OS X Mountain Lion.

Once done, you will return to the Mountain Lion Installer and the newly formatted hard disk will appear as an available disk to install the OS. Select it and click Install. Installation can take up to 30 minutes and there is little you will have to do during the process. Once installation is complete, set up your Mac (language, Apple ID etc).

You should now see the signature galaxy background, the Dock and the Menu Bar. You’ve successfully installed Mountain Lion.

The OS won’t be fully functional just yet; you need drivers. Remember the DSDT file and the Multibeast utility mentioned earlier? This is where they come in. Place the DSDT file on your desktop (in Mountain Lion) and run Multibeast. During the Installation Type step, you will get a large number of options to check. These will list the hardware components like the Wi-Fi card, Graphics card etc. At the top, you will see an option User DSDT Install that you should check. This will enable your system to boot directly from the hard drive. Carefully select which additional drivers you want to install and proceed with the installation. Once this installation is complete, your Hackintosh is complete and ready for use. Enjoy!

When installing this transformation pack, you will be presented with the option to install the UXTheme Patch, DLL files and other extra items (e.g. wallpaper, visual styles, etc). You may select all or some of these options to continue. For example, you may not be interested in installing a screensaver, wallpaper, etc from the pack. To uncheck these items, expand the File and Extras options to deselect items. When done, click Install to begin the installation process.

This will install all required components of the skin pack. Once installation is complete, reboot the system to get the iOS style look for your Windows 7 desktop.

How To Update To Windows Phone 7.8 Right Now

Almost all Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) users were frustrated at the announcement of Windows Phone 8, since it sounded like the end of major updates for WP7 devices as they weren’t to get updated to WP8. However, Microsoft surprised everyone with their intentions to bump all Mango devices to WP7.8, bringing several features of WP8 to them. After months of anticipation, the Portico update has finally started rolling out, and unsurprisingly, the Nokia Lumia series is the first to get the goodies. The rest of you don’t have to despair either, since there is quite an easy method of getting Windows Phone 7.8 on any Mango device right now. If you know for a fact that the update won’t be rolled out for you in the near future, go ahead and try this rather safe method; all it requires is a simple desktop tool and some spare time.

Before you begin with the method below, you should first try the force update method we covered for Mango. There are reports that it works for WP7.8 as well and if it works for you, it’ll save you from having to use the manual workaround. If it doesn’t work, proceed with the instructions below.

Instructions

If all goes well, you won’t lose any of your device data, but back everything up just to be on the safe side.
Connect your Mango phone to your computer via USB. This will launch Zune but if it doesn’t show up, launch it manually.
Head to the ‘Settings’ section in your phone’s menu (in Zune, and not on your phone itself), and click the ‘Update’ option from the sidebar.
If the update is officially available, you don’t need this guide at all; simply proceed with updating the phone using the instructions provided in Zune from there. Otherwise, close Zune.
The next steps will involve pushing new CAB files to your device. For that, download the WP7 Update Cab Sender and extract the contents of the downloaded zip file to a folder on your computer.
Now head to this XDA forum thread to grab the firmware files and language pack(s). You have to check the Settings menu of your device to see all the languages supported by it, as it is essential to grab all the language packs that are currently installed on your phone. There is no distinction between firmware for different carriers and devices. This means you will miss out on any carrier-specific changes of the update that might be coming in the future. You’ll need to grab the OS files for versions 7.10.8779.8 and 7.10.8858.136, while skipping the 7.10.8783.12 file.
There are a lot of language files available at the link provided in the previous step and the only way to identify them is by a language code that is part of their name. For everyone looking to get the English (U.S) version of Windows Phone 7.8, the required code is 0409. Simply press CTRL+F and search for the code to arrive at the desired link. To get the codes for other languages, visit this link. You’ll need to download the relevant language files for both 7.10.8779.8 and 7.10.8858.136 versions.
Now that you have all the necessary files downloaded to your computer, unzip them all and put all files for version 7.10.8779.8 in the folder where you extracted the Cab Sender tool, keeping the files for version 7.10.8858.136 in a different folder for now.
Make sure your device is connected to the computer & Zune is not running, and launch the Cab Sender tool.
Once your device has been detected, press ‘B’ to proceed.
Now just let Cab Sender do its job. The tool will reboot your phone multiple times, and you will get a notification on the device when the update is complete.
Your job isn’t done yet; the above procedure has to be repeated for the version 7.10.8858.136 files as well. To do this, remove all files for version 7.10.8779.8 from Cab Sender’s folder, copy the files for version 7.10.8858.136 to it, and go through steps 9, 10 and 11 once again to install version 7.10.8858.136.

That’s it. If you can’t believe that you really do have Portico on your device, head to the ‘about’ section of the Settings menu and check OS details. Even if you face any errors while applying this method, Cab Sender is smart enough to leave your device in the condition you started the procedure in.

One-Click Update With SevenEighter

WPHacker is at it again, and has made everyone’s life a whole lot easier by coming up with a one-click tool for updating to Portico. The application – named SevenEighter – is available for free, and here is how you can use it.

Download the ZIP file from the link provided below and extract its contents to a separate folder.
Connect your device to the computer, and close Zune once it opens up.
Run the .EXE file available in the downloaded archive.
Click the ‘Install WP7.8′ button and select all the languages currently installed on your device. SevenEighter starts the installation procedure after that, which might lead to your device getting restarted multiple times.
When you see the ‘Update Successful’ message on your phone, check if your OS version is 7.10.8858.136. If it isn’t, run the tool again and repeat the whole procedure. On our Mango-running HTC HD7, this had to be done thrice before the blue splash screen and large WP7.8 tiles showed up.
