Learn How to Use DSLR Camera with Canon Virtual DSLR

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 13 November 2013 0 komentar
If you’re just starting out in photography, there are a lot of resources out there to help you understand the basics before you just jump in. And while books and videos are certainly helpful, one of the more fun ways to learn your way around a camera is by using an online DSLR simulator. We’ve shared one with you before, and now Canon Canada has released a simulator website of its own dubbed Outside of Auto.
The Outside of Auto website maintains that while a Canon DSLR can still take good photos in Auto (debatable, but we digress) the real fun starts once you begin to understand exposure and all the ways to control it. As such, the website gives users three sections to choose from: Learn, Play and Challenge.

The Learn section itself is then split into three sections: Home, Photography 101, and Tips. Home covers the basic exposure triangle, giving visual representations of how aperture, shutter speed and ISO all affect the final exposure. To finish off, it ties everything in to the all-mighty exposure meter, perhaps missing an opportunity to point out that zero doesn’t always translate into “properly exposed.”

Photography 101 then goes into more detail under headings like “Understanding Exposure,” “Setting the Mood” and “Your Shooting Environment,” while Tips includes tidbits that will help beginners understand the Shutter and Aperture Priority modes while explaining some of the benefits and pitfalls of each point in the triangle.
Once users are done learning the basics they can head over to Canon’s simulator in the Play section, where they can put their newfound knowledge to use. This section gives you a chance to shoot as many pictures as it takes to understand those settings and how to properly expose a photo. The only oversight we noticed is the fact that you can’t change the ambient lighting conditions.

Finally, the Challenge section gives users a chance to test their skills against the clock by timing them as they try to replicate 6 different photo scenarios such as “get a good exposure” and “capture the motion of the propeller.”
Ultimately, the website offers beginners a great starting point if they either don’t have their own DSLRs to mess with or just have some time to kill on the Internet while they’re somewhere far away from the camera they do have.
Click here to head over to Outside of Auto and mess around with Canon’s simulator yourself.

Nikon Df review: Hands-on

Posted by Unknown Selasa, 05 November 2013 0 komentar

The Nikon Df DSLR is the maker's latest addition to its flagship D range, with the f standing for 'fusion' between old design and new tech
The Nikon Df is the brand's latest DSLR, sporting a distinctive retro design that's based on the maker's old 35mm film cameras, such as the Nikon FM.
Launched at an event celebrating Nikon's rich history, including a talk from celeb photographer Richard Young, the new Df packs the same 16.2-megapixel FX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 3 image processor found in the maker’s flagship pro camera - the Nikon D4 - meaning that it sits somewhere below the D4 and above the Nikon D7100 in the brand's lineup and is aimed at pros, 'enthusiasts' and those who just want an insanely cool-looking camera.

Nikon Df: Size and build

Crafted from magnesium alloy, the camera's chassis oozes quality, and feels reassuringly weighty, but a lot lighter than the likes of the D4 - in fact, it's actually the lightest of Nikon's FX-format cameras.
You'll be able to choose from an all black model, or a black and silver finish, while the chassis features the same pyramid-like top and 'Nikon' font from the maker's old film SLRs.

We've seen quite a few brands using retro designs as inspiration for their latest Compact System Camera models - step forward, Fujifilm X20, Pentax Q10 and Samsung NX300), but this is the first time we've seen it on a DSLR.
Nikon will also be offering optional black or brown shoulder straps and cases to complement the vintage aesthetics.

Nikon Df: Features

Along with the maker's flagship sensor and processor on board, you'll also get an ISO range of 100-12,800 (extendable up to 204,800), the same weatherproofing as the Nikon D800, a burst speed of 5.5fps, and an AF module with 39 focus points. What's more, the Df offers an impressive 1,400 shots from a single battery charge, says Nikon.

Nikon Df: Controls

The camera features a range of classic click dials, with the dial locks that you'd expect on a pro snapper. They've been designed to give the same experience as the dials on vintage camera, with reassuring click stops - something that you don't get with many digital cameras.

Nikon Df: Screen

The 3.2-inch LCD screen appeared was crisp and bright in our brief hands-on, the 921k-dot resolution making light work of detailed shots. The Df also sports the same glass pentaprism viewfinder found in the D4 and D800.

Nikon Df: Lenses

The Nikon Df uses the F-mount lens system, and its also the first to features a collapsible coupling lever, meaning that you'll be able to attach your stash of vintage non-AI Nikkor lenses directly to the camera.
The Df won't be available body-only at launch, but will come as a kit with a special edition, retro-styled version of the AF-S 50mm f/1.8G NIKKOR lens.

Nikon Df: Picture quality

So far, we've only had a very quick play with the Df, so we can't really comment on picture quality just yet, but with this heritage (and at this price), we're expecting big things. Obviously this is something we'll be looking at in more depth in our full review.

Nikon Df: Verdict

With a superb retro look, powerful sensor and plenty of manual control, as well as the ability to use your old non-AI lenses, there's not much to dislike about the Nikon Dfxc, eept for the price, of course, which puts it out of reach for many of us. We still want it, though. Keep your eyes peeled for a full review.
Nikon Df release date 28 November 2013

Nikon Df price: £2749.99 (only available with kit lens)

Instagram Vs PicsArt - The Photo Sharing App Battle Begins

Posted by Unknown Senin, 30 September 2013 0 komentar

All of us Smartphone users have tried several image filtering apps to add the cool factor to our images. There are several applications that provide such functionality and they can be easily downloaded via Google Play Store. However, the big names are those apps that have managed to integrate the image modification features with social media. I personally use only two such apps Instagram and PicsArt.
Thus, in today’s review I will be comparing the features of the two apps, their pros and cons and how they are different in their functions.
Instagram
2013.03.23-13.13.56
People love simplicity and they have short attention span when it comes to apps, thus Instagram’s interface is much preferred here because users can view the most popular post, load their photos add effects, hash tag it and then upload it to Instagram- all in one page by clicking on the bottom tabs. When you first open Instagram you will see the latest posts from people in your network ie. people you are following.
Features of Instagram are very straightforward, you can take pictures, and then add effects to it via built in image filters of Instagram or other such apps, upload it to Instagram and share it on your social networks such as Facebook. Hashtagging is a popular feature which allows users to assign categories to their images such as #pets #houseparteh #wtf. You can also search hashtags.

Instagram is a great app to share what’s happening around you with your friends and everyone in the Instagram universe.
Pros
  • Millions of users including celebrities and famous personalities from all over the world.
  • More privacy control.
  • Allow Video Uploading
Cons
  • Very few effects to add to images. For more effects users must download other apps.
  • Cannot save images
  • Fixed Ratio of Image.
  • Not better Ui in comparison to Picsart
PicArt- Photo Studio
PIcsArt
Unlike Instagram, PicsArt’s Home page dashboard shows options such as Effect, Collage, loading Photo, Drawing on the photo and more.  The user interface of Pics Art is very smooth you can swipe left or right to go to different pages such as My Network, Interesting, Latest and Pics Arts Artists. In the “My Network page” you will see the images uploaded by people you’ve added to your network. In the “Interesting” section, you will see random images uploaded by PicsArt users. The “latest uploads” show the latest pictures from users and in the “Artist” page you will see artworks of professional artists who use Pics Arts.
PicsArt_2013.03.23-13.00.44
In terms of functionality PicsArt is far above Instagram. It offers wider range of effects such as image filters, color corrections, color splash, collage and drawing on image. You can also download PicsArtGoo, Kaleidoscope and PicsArt for Kids which are add-on apps that can be downloaded from the Google store.
PicsArt_2013.03.23-13.04.59
PicsArt_2013.03.23-13.22.13PicsArt_2013.03.23-13.05.26
PicsArt also supports hashtagging and allows saving of images to your device.
Pros
  • Very smooth and attractive user interface
  • A lot of effects to add to your photos from filters, drawing to collage.
  • View professional images and save them for later.
  • Weekly Photography; Drawing; and Graphic Designing Contest.
Cons
  • Image uploading is slower than Instagram..
  • Ad supported.
Instagram has already established itself as the number one image sharing app . However, this doesn’t mean that PicsArt has lost. PicsArt is an amazing looking app and its user base is growing everyday. Though both Instagram and PicsArt are image sharing app, the latter seems more inclined towards sharing professional looking photos than everyday pictures of users. Maybe in the coming years PicsArt will become an exclusive platform for professional photo sharing.
Still, it is recommended that you use both of these apps as you can find great pictures to share with your friends or save for yourself.

Groopic For iPhone Mashes Up Group Photos To Include The Missing Photographers

Posted by Unknown Minggu, 29 September 2013 0 komentar
One of the more amazing things about our smartphones is that they don’t just put the capabilities of computers and cameras into small, portable form factors, they also leverage the combination of being both these things to give ordinary users the access to tools that previously required advanced photoshopping skills. Case in point: today, a new application called Groopic is launching that lets you take group pictures that also include the photographer snapping the photo.
Over the July 4th weekend at the beach, a gaggle of teenagers near me were snapping iPhone photos of each other standing in front of the waves. I overheard one lament, “I thought you wanted to take a photo with me!” I do, the other had replied, explaining that she also wanted a picture of the others together. The group then rearranged themselves into various configurations over and over so everyone got to be in a picture next to their friends.
Groopic could have solved their problem of wanting a group photo — well, so could have handing their phone over to one of the many beachgoers packed onto the crowded sand, I suppose. But maybe the teens didn’t want to bother anyone, or risk some stranger dropping their phone in the surf.
So instead, they just missed out on a real group photo.
screen_5
Designed by a company called Eyedeus Labs, Groopic uses patent-pending technology developed by a team of five that includes nearly two PhD’s (one is just wrapping his up, explains CEO Ali Rehan). Combined, the team has over 25 years of experience in computer vision research.
The company is focused on creating a new genre of camera-based applications that use computer vision, Rehan tells us. “Using our computer vision technology, we aim to bridge the gap between vision research and industry and, in turn, reshape how people interact with smartphones and cameras,” he says.
Launching first on iPhone, Groopic is the company’s first product. The app is targeted at those aged 18 to 34 – the ones who take the most smartphone photos. Using the app is simple enough. In three steps, users take two photos with their iPhone, then mark the photographers in each one. Groopic then does its magic to automatically combine these incomplete pictures into one.
There are some limitations to the technology, of course. The app requires you stand or sit to the left or right of the group if you’re the one whose image is being swapped out. But, as the clever in-app tutorial teaches you, actually mashing up the two photos only takes a few taps. Snap the photos. Tap the photographers (no need to drag your finger around to outline them, just tap them.) And you’re done.
Rehan says the research team is also involved with prototyping other new technology, and currently has a number of proof of concepts built on PCs that are being ported to smartphones. “Right now, we have some really interesting ‘natural user interface’ gaming demos on cellphones,” he teases.
Eyedeus Labs is now working to bring Groopic to Android. But for now, Groopic is $1.99 in the iTunes App Store here.
