Google Nexus 5 review

The Google Nexus 5 is the second Google phone made by LG and it could well be its last. Has LG gone out with a bang?

The Google Nexus 5 might just be the most obviously leaked smartphone since the iPhone 5s, Samsung Galaxy S4 and... now we think about it, most of the flagship smartphones this year.

The difference between these is that actually we had no idea whether Google would replace the Nexus 4, and if it was going to, which company would build the replacement.

Some said it would be Motorola, following the successful launch of the Moto X in the US it seemed more than plausible that the recently acquired company would start doing its parent’s bidding and churning out a new brand of Google-shaped smartphones.

But that wasn’t to be, instead LG would make one last stand before it passed on the mantle. Leaked by one of Google’s own employees at the Android 4.4 KitKat launch, the Nexus 5 quickly became one of the most talked about smartphones in the lead up to the festive season.

Well now it’s here, with almost no fanfare (was any needed?) the Nexus-branded smartphone almost immediately sold out, of course the question is, is it worth your cash?

Google Nexus 5: Size and build

There’s no dodging this one, the Nexus 5's design is going to instil one of two emotions, the first is quiet approval and the second is complete apathy.
In truth this is somewthing of an achievement over the Nexus 4 which was already pushing the boundaries of minimalist design with the glass back being the only ‘bling’ in sight.
We like the design of the Nexus 5, it’s certainly understated but the moment you hand it to someone you’ll see their face change to one of respect, it feels solidly built and despite it being all plastic it’s not plastic in the way you’d dislike.
The matte finish keeps it from slipping out of your hands and adds a premium touch . Specs-wise, we’re talking hugely minimal changes here, the Nexus 5 is 8.59mm thin, which may not seem like much compared to the Galaxy S4 or the iPhone 5s but it still feels pretty slim.
Weighing in at 130g this is a light phone, and you can feel it, despite all the real-estate you’ll have no problem holding it in one hand.

Samsung hints at 64-bit processors for the S5 and Note 4

Samsung’s 2014 flagship smartphones will launch with 64-bit processors, according to reports coming out of Asia.

The report did not specifically name the phones, but it is widely believed to refer to the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Samsung Galaxy Note 4.
In addition to 64-bit processors, the phones are also expected to ship with WQHD (2,560 by 1,440 pixel resolution) displays. The report also mentioned a 16 megapixel camera.
On Wednesday, Samsung confirmed that it working on 64-bit processors for smartphones. Unlike most Android smartphone makers, the company makes its own chips. It also manufacturers the chips that power Apple’s iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C.

Stephen Woo, president of Systems SI at Samsung electronics told CNET that the company is taking a “two-step approach” to developing 64-bit chips.
According to Woo, the firm is planning on developing a 64-bit chip based on designs from ARM. Once it has mastered that technology, it will design its own chip. It is believed it will be the latter chip that ends up in both of Samsung’s 2014 flagships smartphones.
“We are marching on schedule,” Woo said Wednesday. “We will offer the first 64-bit [processor] based on ARM’s own core. After that, we will offer an even more optimised 64-bit [processor] based on our own optimisations.”

Earlier reports have suggested that Samsung is developing a slimline 16 megapixel camera with built-in optical image stabilisation. The latest report fits in with those earlier claims.
Samsung and another display company Japan Display are expected to “begin volume production of WQHD displays soon”, claims Digitimes.

MacBook Pro Retina 2013 review

The Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display is the brand's latest high-performance laptop but is it worth your pennies? Read on to find out

When Apple first launched the first MacBook Pro with Retina display it was clearly Apple at its best, taking something that the public imagined to be impossible and then making it not only possible, but packaging it in such a way that it looked like it had been appearing on laptops for years.
Of course, as with all products that push boundaries (such as the Samsung Galaxy Gear) there are going to be some compromises, and the Retina MacBook was no different.
For starters there was the price, the entry-level model cost an eye-wincing £1,799 and for that you got a 2.3GHz i7 processor and only 256GB of SSD storage, and then there was the battery life.

Even with average use the original Pro threw in the towel after just five hours, showing that while the Retina display was indeed stunning, it was also incredibly greedy.

Thankfully though, Apple loves nothing more than to tinker, taking a concept and then tinkering and fine-tuning to an astonishing degree making gains year on year.

The original iPhone launched with a revolutionary touchscreen, but it had no App Store and couldn't even manage 3G when other smartphones were managing video calls over mobile networks.
Just a few years later and the iPhone 5s now boasts a Retina Display, 4G and a state-of-the-art fingerprint scanner.

That's not to say the rest of the industry have been sat twiddling its thumbs, far from it, above-HD displays are now becoming more and more commonplace on laptops and Apple is now under attack on all fronts.

The question that has to be asked is - now that the MacBook Pro Retina is no longer the only laptop with a Full-HD display, is it still the top choice?

MacBook Pro Retina 2013: Size and build

The first thing you'll notice is how thin the new MacBook Pro is and at 1.8cm it's now beginning to encroach on the MacBook Air 2013 which measures in at 1.7cm.
To put that into perspective you really have to line the two up together. Taking into account how big the foot rests are on the 13-inch Air it actually reaches the point where they look almost identical in height (the Air's wedge design notwithstanding).
Things get even more impressive when you look at their comparative footprints with the 13-inch MacBook Pro Retina fitting comfortably within the Air making Apple's thinnest tablet almost look wide in comparison.
Of course, there's a trade-off somewhere and that's the weight, the Pro Retina has been reduced in weight from 1.62kg to 1.57kg on the 13-inch while the new 15-inch weighs 2.02kg. Yes that's substantially heavier, but considering the non-Retina 13-inch MacBook Pro weighs 2.06kg the achievement become apparent.

IPhone 5 Tips & Tricks

Apple has launched a set of new guides called Tips and Tricks in a bid to help users discover all the lesser known new features that are packed into iOS7 and the new iPhones 5S and 5C.

The pages inform users about the models that are currently available, so that’s the iPhone 4S, 5S and 5C. Some of the tips are covering old ground, things which most people have to grips with anyway thanks to media coverage.

Where these pages really become useful is when revealing features that users have either overlooked or not delved into the operating system enough to discover them.

The guide helps users make better use of Siri, for example by teaching it how to correctly pronounce your name or identify relationships in your contacts list (parents etc).

Face Time is a handy feature of iOS7 that could potentially save users money. The guides explain how to make audio-only Face Time calls.

Other features explained are being able to see time stamps on text messages and access the Spotlight search field by using swiping motions. There are tips for use of the iTunes Radio and detailed instructions on navigating the new menus.

These tips and tricks are ideal if you are one of those people that doesn’t like reading the users’ manual!

After Apple Sells A Record Number Of New iPhones, Its Stock Soars

It looks like Wall Street is showing a little bit of love for Apple. Just hours after Cupertino announced impressive first weekend sales numbers for the new iPhones, its share price has jumped nearly 4 percent. Earlier in the day, the gain was closer to 6 percent.

Apple announced that the combined sales for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c had topped 9 million units between Friday, Sept. 20 and Sunday, Sept. 22. This beat the previous record for first weekend sales of 5 million units recorded in 2012 with the iPhone 5. The company also announced that more than 200 million iOS devices are now running iOS 7.

One day won’t right the year-long slide for Apple stock. For 2013, Apple’s share price is still down 9 percent, and nearly 31 percent year over year.

Apple’s fiscal year ends on Sept. 29.

Apple sells nine million iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c phones

Apple today announced it has sold a record-breaking nine million new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c models, just three days after the launch of the new iPhones on September 20.

In addition, more than 200 million iOS devices are now running the completely redesigned iOS 7, making it the fastest software upgrade in history.

Both iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c are available in the US, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK.

Demand for iPhone 5s has exceeded the initial supply, and many online orders are scheduled to be shipped in the coming weeks.

“This is our best iPhone launch yet–more than nine million new iPhones sold–a new record for first weekend sales,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO.

“The demand for the new iPhones has been incredible, and while we’ve sold out of our initial supply of iPhone 5s, stores continue to receive new iPhone shipments regularly. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone.”

iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c feature iOS 7, the most significant iOS update since the original iPhone, featuring a stunning new user interface, completely redesigned with an elegant color palette, distinct, functional layers and subtle motion that make it feel more alive.
